Cops: We've got intel foreigners are planning to disrupt Sabah polls

SABAH POLLS | Sabah police commissioner Hazani Ghazali said the cops have received information that certain elements from a neighbouring country are planning to enter Sabah in large numbers and create trouble during polling day on Saturday.

“In conjunction with the Sabah state election, we have received information that there will be a large influx of immigrants from a neighbouring country who will come to Sabah to create a disturbance.

“We have to thwart this so that the polls can proceed smoothly and public order and security can be maintained,” he told a press conference at the Sabah police headquarters, according to a report by Bernama.

Hazani declined to be specific beyond that, refusing to disclose the source of the information, the number of potential troublemakers and the matter of disturbance they intended to cause.

The snap election in Sabah was called after former chief minister Musa Aman initiated a coup against the incumbent Warisan Plus government of Shafie Apdal through defections in order to make a comeback as chief minister.

However, Shafie outmanoeuvred him by securing a dissolution of the state assembly, paving the way to a fresh election.

Campaigning began on Sept 12 and polling day is on Sept 26. A total of 73 seats are up for grabs.
