PKR candidates up in arms as 'cash is king' catches on with PM in Sabah

SABAH POLLS | Sabah PKR election candidates have condemned Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's suggestion that Sabah could only get more resources if they voted for his Gabungan Rakyat Sabah alliance comprising Perikatan Nasional (PN), BN and PBS.

The seven PKR candidates led by its state chief Christina Liew said Muhyiddin should respect the spirit of federalism.

"If the prime minister cannot uphold the spirit of federalism and be a prime minister for all states, the prime minister should resign.

"The prime minister should not threaten Sabahans with such a statement.

"Sabahans are well aware of the 'cash is king' culture that is being promoted by the (federal) government," they said in a joint statement today.

The statement was inked by Liew who is defending her Api-Api state seat along with Mustapha Sakmud (Tempasuk), Peto Galim (Inanam), Abdul Rahman Yakub (Klias), Raymond Ahuar (Sook), Alijus Sipil (Tamparuli) and Sazalye Donol Abdullah (Matunggong).

"We believe that Sabahans are matured enough to reject the federal government's political tricks," they said.

During a visit to Kudat yesterday, Muhyiddin was quoted by The Edge as saying that the government could only give assistance to Sabah as far as what is obligated under the Federal Constitution because the incumbent Warisan Plus-led Sabah government and PN-led federal government were not on the same page.

"If the state and federal governments are on the same wavelength, of one heart, one mind, it’s easier (to channel aid),” he was quoted as saying.

Muhyiddin is pushing for his pact comprising PN, BN and PBS to unseat the incumbent Warisan Plus government which is made up of Warisan, Pakatan Harapan and Upko.

The outcome of the Sabah election is critical for Muhyiddin as it will be a guide for him on when to call for the 15th general election.

Campaigning for the Sabah election began on Sept 12 and voters will go to the polls on Sept 26. - Mkini
