Rather than seeking to declare a state of emergency, a Selangor BN leader has urged Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to be a "gentleman" and resign from his position.
Selangor BN information chief Isham Jalil (photo, above) said it would be best for the current political uncertainties to be resolved by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
"It would be best for the people and the country if Muhyiddin resigns as prime minister and leaves the matter to the discretion and wisdom of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on whether to appoint a new prime minister, dissolve parliament or declare an emergency.
"This move is more 'gentleman' by giving full room for the King to decide without any restrictions or pressure (if any)," said Isham in a statement.
Similar calls have also been made by other rival political party leaders who claimed the proposal to declare a state of emergency was Muhyiddin's attempt at saving himself from the loss of majority support in parliament.
Among others, Amanah in a statement earlier said Muhyiddin should take a more dignified move rather than seeking to declare a state of emergency.
Istana Negara in a statement this morning said the King would discuss with the other rulers on the suggestions he received from the cabinet yesterday.
The statement, however, did not give any details on the suggestions or if a proclamation of emergency was part of the suggestions as heavily speculated.
In a lengthy post on Facebook, Isham shared his views on possible reasons for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's deliberation of Muhyiddin's suggestions presented during his audience yesterday.
Among others, the former officer to ex-premier Najib Abdul Razak said it would be illogical for Covid-19 free areas to also be dragged into the emergency orders intended to address rising cases in critical areas.
"This is especially if the states are far apart, and interstate travel restrictions can be reenforced without an emergency declaration.
"Therefore, considerations must be made on whether existing movement restriction orders and other powers under Act 342 or other laws are adequate to be enforced in a more targeted and effective manner before a blanket state of emergency is declared nationwide," he said.
Any declaration of emergency can only be made with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's consent, barring which, the Dewan Rakyat sitting will proceed as scheduled on Nov 2, as well as tabling of Budget 2021 on Nov 6.
A list of opposition MPs had also filed fresh no-confidence motions against Muhyiddin after an initial one filed by former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad was not debated in previous sittings.
Isham noted that while the motions of no confidence might not be debated if placed at the end of the order paper, a vote against the Budget 2021 could still show a clear loss of support for Muhyiddin and the Perikatan Nasional administration. - Mkini
