KOTA BARU: Two men were detained for possessing 570 boxes of frozen chicken worth about RM90,000 in an anti-smuggling operation in Pasir Mas today.
The two were spotted inside a lorry when they were arrested by members of the General Operations Force at Kampung Limau Purut.
GOF Ninth Battalion commanding officer Superintendent Nor Azizan Yusof said the team was on 'Op Benteng' rounds when they received public tip off regarding smuggling activity at the village.
"Arrived at the area around 6am, they spotted a suspicious looking lorry parked at the back of a house.
"Upon approaching the vehicle, they saw two men inside it and upon inspecting the lorry, the GOF members discovered the frozen chickens," he said in a statement.
Nor Azizan said the GOF members later detained the 27-year-old lorry driver and his attendant, aged 19.
He added initial investigation showed that the frozen chicken had been smuggled into the state via the many illegal jetties along the border.
"It is also believed that the frozen chicken will be sold to local suppliers as demand for the smuggled items are higher here," he said.
Nor Azizan said the two suspects, both locals, were being held for further investigation. The lorry valued about RM50,000 was also seized. - NST
