The National Security Council (NSC) has dismissed a purportedly leaked document regarding the reinstatement of the movement control order (MCO) as ‘fake news’.
“This is fake news. Stop spreading news that is unverified.
“Don’t share if you are unsure,” it said in an announcement via the messaging service Telegram along with a heavily redacted version of the purported document.
The document purports that the government has agreed to reinstate the MCO.
This comes as Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah admitted that the conditional MCO has failed to contain the Covid-19 outbreak.
Instead, the disease's infectivity has been on the rise.
Thus, the ministry is recommending a ‘targeted’ version of the MCO implemented on Mar 18 last year to avert an impending breakdown of the nation’s healthcare system.
Malaysia has reported a record-high of 2,593 new Covid-19 cases today, while the number of active cases, intubated patients, intensive care unit patients, and a number of new clusters also reached record-high levels.
The country currently has 24,347 active Covid-19 cases, out of 28,674 hospital and quarantine centre beds available nationwide. - Mkini
