KOTA KINABALU: A civil servant was arrested by the Sabah Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for allegedly abusing his position by giving out RM36,000 in contracts to his family members.
Sources said the man, who is in his 40s, was arrested at 12.15pm at the MACC headquarters here.
“The suspect was arrested for giving a few supply and maintenance contracts for ICT equipment and also food supply worth RM36,000 to his family members,” the source said.
MACC Sabah chief S Karunanithy confirmed the arrest.
He also expressed his disappointment as there were still public servants abusing their positions for personal interest by allegedly giving out contracts to their families.
“This is an offence under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009. Even though we have issued many reminders to civil servants, this still happens,” he said.
In another development, Karunanithy confirmed that two more individuals were nabbed in connection with the arrest of four staff members of a federal government agency in Sabah for falsifying travel allowance claims a few days ago.
He said the two individuals, from the same agency and aged 39 and 41, were held at noon today.
“The suspects were arrested under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009.
“All of them will be held for 24 hours for further investigations and will be produced in the Kota Kinabalu Special Corruption Court to be remanded,” he said. - FMT
