Sarawak won't relax quarantine period for ministers

Sarawak will not follow Putrajaya's order which will give ministers returning from overseas a shortened quarantine period if they stick to a strict itinerary.

"The policy of entering Sarawak from overseas remains unchanged (applicable to everyone)," said state Health Minister Dr Sim Kui Hian on Facebook yesterday.

Sarawak has immigration autonomy.

Currently, the state imposes a 14-day quarantine, instead of the 10 days set by the federal government.

Two days ago, federal Health Minister Dr Adham Baba issued an order allowing him to relax the quarantine period for ministers returning from abroad to three days.

In justifying this, Adham said this may eventually be extended to business travellers and the public.

This, he said, is because the 10-day quarantine period had deterred investors from visiting the country, thus hurting the economy.

Critics, however, said this decision lacked any scientific basis. - Mkini
