Sebatik assemblyperson leaves Warisan, supports GRS

Sebatik assemblyperson Hassan A Gani Pg Amir today announced quitting Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) as he said the party was prioritising politics over the people's wellbeing.

He said he is now an independent assemblyperson who supports the Sabah government under the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition. He said he also supports the leadership of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor.

"What the country needs today is political stability. This is important to ensure that the government can give its full attention to dealing with Covid-19 and safeguarding the wellbeing of the people.

"I am deeply saddened to see Warisan which is still seen to be in tune with Pakatan Harapan placing a priority on politics over the wellbeing of the people who are burdened with the Covid-19 issue," he said in an exclusive interview with Bernama in Kota Kinabalu today.

With Hassan now supporting GRS, a coalition comprising Perikatan Nasional, BN, and Parti Bersatu Sabah, they currently have the support of 48 assemblypersons out of 79.

Hassan said he was very disappointed that Warisan rejected Budget 2021 in Parliament which, to him, showed that the party had turned its back on the interests of the people.

“All the government’s efforts in addressing Covid-19 need budget allocations. Enough with politics, it is time to look after the wellbeing of the people,” he said.

He also decided to leave the party because of actions by the Warisan leadership who he said turned their backs on grassroots members as well as state assemblypersons, who were trying to voice out the people's interests.

“I also decided to leave Warisan to serve the people in my constituency. It will be easier to do my job as an independent assemblyperson who supports the GRS government," he said.

He said he made the decision without pressure from any party and believed that the state government under GRS could serve the people of Sabah well.
