7 ‘kerajaan gagal’ protesters to be freed today

Police are investigating 20 people about the protest held in Parit Raja, Batu Pahat, last Thursday.

JOHOR BAHRU: Seven out of 20 youths remanded over an anti-government protest last week will be released, Johor Umno Youth’s legal secretariat said today.

Its chairman, Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid, said they would be released later today, while awaiting a decision on their charges.

He told FMT that only three of those arrested this week have been brought to the court for a remand order.

Yesterday, Johor police chief Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said seven more people were arrested in connection with the “kerajaan gagal” demonstration held in Parit Raja, Batu Pahat on the eve of Hari Raya.

Fared said no charges have been filed in the Batu Pahat court so far, adding that his team was closely following the developments in the case.

“If any of them are charged, Johor Umno Youth’s legal secretariat will continue to provide free legal services.

“We have confidence in the credibility of the police in conducting transparent investigations and in the judiciary system,” he added.

Fared also reminded people to avoid labelling those detained as “rioters”, as investigations were still ongoing.

Last Thursday, a video clip of a street protest in Parit Raja, which saw a group of motorists burning flares and setting ablaze a banner with the words “kerajaan gagal” on it, was posted online and soon went viral on social media.

Investigations into the incident are being carried out under Sections 144, 269, and 505 (b) of the Penal Code, Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957, Section 48 of the Road Transport Act, and the Emergency (Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases) Ordinance 2021. - FMT
