Pakatan Harapan top brass today warned that the Independent Special Committee on Emergency 2021 must speak up or risk being complicit in the abuse of emergency powers.
In a statement today, Harapan's presidential council said although coalition representatives have been pressing the committee to recommend the end of emergency, the committee has not offered any response.
"If the committee remains silent, Harapan is forced to question its role and the function of the coalition's representatives in the committee.
"Alternatively, are our representatives meant to legitimise all the abuses of emergency powers which have suspended Parliament?" asked the presidential council.
The committee is believed to be meeting once a month in Putrajaya but does not provide periodic updates of their activities.
There are three Harapan members in the committee. The emergency is slated to expire on Aug 1.
The Harapan presidential council said Health Ministry data had shown that the emergency had not achieved the intended goal of controlling the spread of Covid-19 and instead appeared to have the opposite effect.
"It is clear that emergency powers did not succeed... and the situation has become more serious. The Perikatan Nasional government has failed," said the council.
The only effect of the emergency, said the council, was a "political lockdown" to save the Perikatan Nasional government which, they alleged, no longer enjoy the support of the majority in the Dewan Rakyat.
"Unfortunately, the 'political lockdown' is done without any responsibility, transparency, and without check and balance. It has made matters worse.
"Given that all MPs have been vaccinated, the presidential council urges all MPs to demand the reopening of Parliament," said the council.
The statement was signed by PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng. - Mkini
