Penang DAP denies writing a letter on behalf of 'vaccine donor'

Penang DAP has denied writing a letter on behalf of businessperson Yong Chee Kong, who allegedly planned to donate two million doses of Covid-19 vaccines to the state.

This is after Yong claimed in an interview that Penang DAP had written a letter to be presented as a formal letter to donate the vaccines.

"This is a serious and unfounded allegation. Penang DAP had not written a letter as alleged, and a police report has been lodged today," state Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow (above) said.

Yong is a Malaysian, who claims to work for Xintai Enterprise Development Ltd - a company based in Hong Kong.

In one interview, he claimed that the vaccine donation offer was a personal initiative. In another, he claimed to be acting on behalf of his "boss" in Hong Kong.

According to reports, he had initially offered to donate Sinovac vaccines to the Sabah government, which rejected his offer.

Yong claimed that the Penang government then approached him to get the vaccines.

His attempt to donate vaccines came to light after de facto Covid-19 Vaccination Minister Khairy Jamaluddin dismissed the offer as a scam.

This was due to an error in the company's name in a letter bearing Yong's signature, which he claimed that Penang DAP had prepared.

Separately, Khairy's office is also in touch with Yong and it claimed that Yong had not furnished any proof of the planned vaccine donation.

The businessperson was questioned by police today over the case.

Chow, who is Penang DAP chairperson, apologised for the controversy surrounding the alleged donation and said the Penang government would give its full cooperation to the authorities.

He also said that he had written a letter to Khairy today, requesting permission for the state to purchase its own Covid-19 vaccines. - Mkini
