Petaling Jaya district police chief Mohamad Fakhrudin Abdul Hamid has urged the public not to be fooled into sharing their nude pictures.
He said there have been 21 such cases in Petaling Jaya for this year alone.
He added that these cases involved victims being blackmailed after they have shared nude photographs or videos.
"Police have also identified 12 cases where the victims made payments to the suspect totalling RM33,788.88.
"A vast majority of the cases involve syndicates which fooled victims on social media," he said.
Other cases also involved suspects who are known to the victims, such as former husbands or former boyfriends.
Fakhrudin said the modus operandi involved convincing the victims to send their nude pictures or appear nude on camera.
"The syndicate will then record the video or pictures of the victim so that they can blackmail them," he said.
The victims will then be asked to pay up or the nude pictures will be sent to their family and friends.
"The Petaling Jaya police advise the public not to be easily fooled by such methods.
"People must be wiser in using social media and be mindful that any act on social media can be recorded.
"Don't be too trusting of strangers on social media as many have fallen victim to such scams," he said.
To date, Fakhrudin said two of the cases saw the blackmailers charged in court while another 19 cases are under investigation. - Mkini
