Sarawak will be under movement control order (MCO) restrictions from May 29 until June 11.
The MCO - which bars social and religious activities - will be implemented just days ahead of Gawai celebrations.
However, details on movement restrictions have yet to be published.
Sarawak and Sabah did not follow Peninsular Malaysia in upgrading to MCO on May 12, instead opting for conditional MCO restrictions.
Today, the Health Ministry reported 772 new Covid-19 cases in Sarawak.
According to the Sarawak disaster management committee (SDMC), there had been many new cases in Sarawak recently due to non-compliance of Covid-19 protocols, especially during the Hari Raya break.
“The situation in Sarawak is getting worse. The health facilities are in critical condition. Moreover, there are new Covid-19 variants detected in Sarawak.
“We have to take drastic measures to control the spread of Covid-19 now, before it gets worse,” said the SDMC.
The SDMC said that the daily average over a period of a week has been steadily increasing and the daily average was now 623 as of today.
Currently, there are 81 Covid-19 patients utilising intensive care beds, of which 31 require ventilator support.
The SDMC urged those celebrating Gawai to do so in their own homes and refrain from house visits, gatherings and cock fighting events.
“We have to do so because we love our family, neighbours and friends. Our culture, tradition and identity will not disappear by not celebrating this year,” said the SDMC. - Mkini
