137k of 150k laptops distributed so far - Radzi

PARLIAMENT | As of Oct 9, a total of 137,987 laptops have been distributed to students from lower-income families in 1,169 schools across the nation, said Education Minister Mohd Radzi Md Jidin.

Radzi said additionally, 6,387 laptops have been received by Yayasan Hasanah - the foundation in charge of distributing the laptops - to be distributed to the students in the near future.

“The balance of 5,626 units will be distributed as soon as Yayasan Hasanah receives them,” he said in a written reply on Monday.

He was responding to Wong Shu Qi (Pakatan Harapan-Kluang) who had asked him about the status of distribution on the 150,000 laptops promised under the Cerdik initiative, as well as the breakdown of units received by each state and constituency.

Previously, the education minister revealed on Sept 18 that only 111,040 laptops had been distributed at that point.

All 150,000 laptops were expected to be delivered to students in lower-income families by the end of September this year.

Sarawak and Sabah were among the top two states to receive the highest distribution of laptops with 24,689 and 22,588 laptops distributed respectively.

States that have received the least number of laptops were Labuan and Putrajaya, having only received 677 and 272 laptops respectively.

Other states include Johor (14,336), Kedah (8,696), Kelantan (7,659), Malacca (2,848), Negeri Sembilan (4,983), Pahang (9,857), Perak (10,278), Perlis (1,525), Penang (3,536), Selangor (17,058), Terengganu (6,634) and Kuala Lumpur (2,351).

The Cerdik programme - overseen by Yayasan Hasanah - was introduced during the tabling of Budget 2021 in November 2020, where Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz had said that GLCs and GLICs would contribute RM150 million for laptops to students in 500 schools.

Former deputy education minister Teo Nie Ching (Harapan-Kulai) had joined others in criticising the government when deliveries were temporarily halted in June 2021 after the distribution of only 13,000 laptops.

Teo had also branded the government as discriminatory after revelations that only 406 laptops across six out of 527 Tamil vernacular schools (SJKT) in the country received laptops under the Cerdik initiative.
