MP concerned over entry of foreign legal firms, lawyers into Sabah

De facto law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar tells RSN Rayer that all foreign lawyers will be subjected to Malaysian laws and action by the Advocates and Solicitors Disciplinary Board.

KUALA LUMPUR: An MP has raised concerns over an amendment to the Advocates Ordinance (Sabah) that he claims allows foreign firms in Sabah a front for illegal activities.

DAP’s RSN Rayer said he was concerned with the amendments to Clause 12 of the ordinance which includes a new part on international partnerships, foreign firms and registration of foreign lawyers in Sabah and Labuan.

The Jelutong MP asked how these foreign firms and lawyers would be monitored and whether they would be subjected to Malaysian laws.

“How do we make sure they won’t be used by any party in illegal money issues?

“What steps are being taken to ensure that these firms and lawyers don’t set foot in Sabah with the intention to commit these crimes?” he said in the Dewan Rakyat.

Rayer also questioned the need for foreign lawyers when local lawyers were suffering due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In answer, de facto law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said this international partnership was in accordance with the commitment of the government to liberalisation and rules of the World Trade Organization and General Agreement on Trade in Services.

The Santubong MP said all lawyers, regardless of whether they are local or foreign, would be subjected to Malaysian laws and action by the Advocates and Solicitors Disciplinary Board. - FMT
