KOTA KINABALU: Sindumin assemblyman Yusof Yacob, who quit Warisan earlier this month to become an independent rep, has denied a news report claiming that he had resigned his position as an assemblyman.

The former Warisan information chief told FMT that he is still the representative for the southwestern Sabah state constituency.

“That’s not true, I have not resigned,” he said when contacted last night.

“I remain the assemblyman for Sindumin but as an independent supporting the federal government led by Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Sabah chief minister Hajiji Noor.”

Yusof, who announced his departure from Warisan on Oct 8, also denied that he had signed a resignation letter to vacate his seat. The purported letter has been widely shared online since the day he left the party.

An online portal, quoting a source, had reported that Yusof had tendered his resignation as an assemblyman yesterday.

The portal also reported that a by-election is imminent for the state seat due to this, and that the Sabah state speaker Kadzim M Yahya was expected to make an announcement over the seat next week.

Following Yusof’s departure, Warisan had submitted a pre-signed resignation letter purportedly by the Sindumin assemblyman to the state assembly speaker in the hope of getting the seat vacated.

The party used a similar letter to push Sebatik assemblyman Hassan A Gani Pg Amir to vacate his seat when he left Warisan to support Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in February. However, it was rejected by Kadzim.

Warisan had said then that Hassan made a pledge, including to vacate his seat if he were to switch parties, and signed a document of allegiance to Warisan in front of the party’s lawyers before the state election in September last year.

Meanwhile, Kadzim said his office had received the letter (supposedly signed by Yusof) from Warisan but that he had also received a sworn affidavit from the Sindumin assemblyman, which sought to withdraw all his previous oaths or pre-signed pledges to Warisan prior to the Sabah election.

Kadzim added he needed time to examine the letter with his deputies and state assembly secretary before deciding on the matter. - FMT
