Warisan disappointed over delayed tabling of MA63 bill

Warisan president Shafie Apdal said his party is disappointed after the government decided to delay the tabling of a constitutional amendment bill relating to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

He said the delay was a repeated letdown for Sabahans and Sarawakians alike, who saw the previous tabling of a similar bill failed to get two-third majority support in Parliament two years ago.

“The matter had already been meticulously studied and despite having been discussed during the premiership of the last four prime ministers of Malaysia, it still remains unresolved,” Shafie said in a statement today.

He added that the party nevertheless commended de facto Law Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar for the latter’s commitment and efforts to pursue the issue.

It said the minister worked hard to ensure everything was in order for the tabling of the bill in the Parliament.

However, the efforts eventually stumbled when the cabinet decided to seek more clarification from Attorney-General Idrus Harun.

“It is important to support the MA63 because it is well within the interests of the people and the country,” Shafie stressed.

Previously, Wan Junaidi said the constitutional amendment bill related to MA63 would be tabled in the Parliament on Oct 26.

However, the minister backtracked today, saying the bill will be delayed until the AG clarifies certain issues.

The bill seeks to amend Clause 2, Article 1 of the Federal Constitution, which would provide wider autonomy to the Sabah and Sarawak governments. - Mkini
