PETALING JAYA: The Bangladeshi national who was arrested on Nov 5 for making racist remarks on social media over Deepavali has been jailed four months for overstaying.
Johor police chief Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said the sentence was meted out on Sabbir Hossen, 29, by the Muar magistrates’ court on Nov 16 under Section 15 (1) (c) of the Immigration Act.
He told FMT the investigations under Section 505 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) for allegedly threatening public order and peace with the racist clip was still pending.
At a press conference on Nov 7, Ayob Khan had said the Bangladeshi was arrested in Muar in connection with a video that was posted on social media related to Hinduism, Muslims and the Deepavali festival.
In the TikTok viral clip posted on his account @Sabbir Hossen, a bearded young man with a skull cap was seen insulting the festival as one of Syirik (sin of idol-worshipping and polytheism in Islam).
He said those celebrating Deepavali did not pray in the morning while during Hari Raya, Muslims prayed first. He said it was a celebration of the infidels and told people in general not to follow it. - FMT
