MP fumes at 'Keluarga Malaysia' T-shirts made in Bangladesh

PARLIAMENT | DAP's Rasah MP Cha Kee Chin has demanded that Putrajaya comes up with guidelines that government procurements be for Malaysian-made products so as to spur the local economy.

Cha raised this during the 2022 Budget debate in Dewan Rakyat yesterday, after expressing his disappointment that the "Malaysian Family" T-shirts given to the parliamentarians were indeed made in Bangladesh.

"This is the Malaysian Family T-Shirt we received. The T-shirt has the picture of the prime minister (Ismail Sabri Yaakob), The quality is good. But I want to express my disappointment that it was made in Bangladesh," he said.

"We support the Malaysian Family (concept), but how could its merchandised products be made in Bangladesh?" asked Cha, who raised a white Malaysian Family T-shirt in the House.

"I wish the ministry will raise this matter in the cabinet meeting so that the government formulates a strict guideline to purchase local products in all procurements that will be purchased using public funds," Cha said.

Meanwhile, Wong Hon Wai (Pakatan Harapan-Bukit Bendera) urged National Unity Minister Halimah Mohamed Sadique to apologise for the Malaysian Family T-shirt issue.

"I suggest that the national unity minister apologises for the Malaysian Family T-shirt incident," Wong said while interjecting Cha's debate.

To this, Cha replied: "I just want us to learn a lesson from this incident so that it would not happen again.

"After this, we don't want to blame anyone else because it is important for us to move forward and make sure that our country progresses in the Buy Malaysian Products Campaign." - Mkini
