Crucifix controversy: MCA accuses DAP of placating Malays

MCA secretary-general Chong Sin Woon has accused the DAP of removing the crucifix from a photograph of Malacca's Christ Church to placate Malay Muslim voters.

However, the Chinese version of DAP organ The Rocket which published the image on Facebook said it was an honest mistake as it had purchased the photograph from iStock, an image bank service by US-based Getty Images.

Chong, in a separate Facebook post, accused the DAP of being "eunuchs".

"In order to win votes, the DAP and Pakatan Harapan can remove the cross from a famous landmark in Malacca.

"This reflects its self-deprecating mentality. They fear that the cross will affect support among Malay Muslims.

"The DAP boldly talks about democracy and freedom but at its core, it is a eunuch," Chong said.

The Rocket has since updated the image to reflect the iconic landmark in Malacca town, which is in red and carries the cross with the words "Christ Church Melaka 1753".

"The image of the Christ Church was recently purchased from iStock by a colleague in charge of graphics who did not notice that the name and cross of the Church in the original paid image were missing.

"This is a genuine mistake, please forgive us," The Rocket said in a Facebook post.

The image was used as a poster backdrop to urge voters to return home to vote during the Malacca polls. Polling day is tomorrow.

The poster, in Chinese, reads: "Return home for a day for a decision that lasts five years".
