Duyong contest sparks family drama for Gan political dynasty in Malacca

MALACCA POLLS | The Malacca polls have sparked a family drama for the Gan political dynasty in Malacca, which has produced a line of well-known MCA politicians in the state.

This was after a member of the family, Gan Tian Soh, decided to contest as an independent candidate in Duyong.

This was despite MCA surrendering the seat to Umno in the Malacca polls set on Nov 20.

His brother Gan Tian Loo, who is also the Kota Melaka MCA chief, warned that his family will not cast any vote for the younger brother.

“I’ve made it clear. My family and I will not vote for him,” Tian Loo was quoted as saying by Sin Chew Daily.

Tian Loo said his family had no knowledge that Tian Soh would be contesting in the state polls and was shocked to find out from the news after the nomination process today.

He added that MCA will take disciplinary action against Tian Soh.

Gan Tian Loo

Tian Loo and Tian Soh are the sons of bodybuilder-turned-politician Gan Boon Leong.

Boon Leong was a household name in Malacca, having won various body-building championships.

His venture into MCA politics was equally prolific. Boon Leong is known as a key figure who spearheaded the creation of the famed Jonker Walk in Malacca where a statue sculpture of him from his bodybuilding days still stands.

The state seat of Duyong has also been a family affair of sorts for the Gan political dynasty.

Boon Leong was the Duyong assemblyperson from 1995 until 2004, where his son Tian Loo then succeeded him.

Tian Loo was the assemblyperson for Duyong from 2004 until 2013.

In 2013, he was unseated by DAP, the first time the seat had fallen to the federal opposition.

Tian Loo did not contest the seat in the 2018 general election. MCA put up another candidate - Lee Kiat Lee, who also lost to DAP.

In the upcoming Malacca polls, MCA had decided to surrender the seat to Umno.

Tian Loo’s younger brother Tian Soh will be going up against Harapan’s incumbent Damian Yeo from DAP and Umno’s Mohd Noor Helmy who is representing BN.

The other candidates are PN’s Kamarudin Sidek, who is also the state PAS chief, Putra’s Mohd Faizal and another independent candidate Muhamad Hafiz Ishak under the “key” logo.

Tian Soh will be using the “rabbit” logo. - Mkini
