Ex-Penang youth chief quits Gerakan, cites president’s ‘incompetence’

Jason Loo says Gerakan president Dominic Lau has not accepted responsibility for the party’s loss in the Melaka polls.

PETALING JAYA: Former Penang Gerakan Youth chief Jason Loo has quit the party, questioning Dominic Lau’s competence as the president.

In announcing his resignation yesterday, he said Lau had not accepted responsibility for Gerakan’s defeat in the Melaka elections, where the party did not win any of the five seats it contested under the Perikatan Nasional banner.

Loo claimed Lau “can’t wait to become a senator now”.

Loo said Lau had not drawn up any strategies for the party to become popular and win seats.

“After the defeat, not only did he not hold himself accountable, but now he has shamelessly accepted a senatorship, which is no different from being a political frog,” he said in a Facebook post yesterday.

Lau was sworn in as a senator yesterday.

On Monday, former Penang Gerakan chairman and three-term assemblyman Teng Chang Yeow was also reported to have resigned from the party

Loo said he had been openly protesting against the “incompetence of party leaders” since last July.

“As a consequence, they suspended my Gerakan membership for six months. After that, they extended my suspension indefinitely.

“This is what the Gerakan leaders are capable of doing now,” he said.

He claimed that Lau had been “making bad headlines” since he became party president. - FMT
