Consumers in Peninsular Malaysia will be paying around 10 sen to 45 sen extra for Gardenia bread products starting Dec 1.
Gardenia Bakeries (KL) Sdn Bhd said that this is as it had been greatly affected by rising costs due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
"Gardenia KL has also been impacted by these challenges and has made every effort to absorb raw material price increases.
"Nevertheless, tremendous increases in manufacturing, and material costs, which are beyond our control, has placed Gardenia KL in a difficult position with no alternative except to implement a price revision on Gardenia products effective Dec 1," it said in a statement today.
It added that among others, the price of flour, whole wheat, shortening, cocoa powder, milk, and packaging have gone up.
According to a price revision list reportedly sent to retailers, the price of Gardenia's Original Classic bread will go up 30 sen to RM2.80, while a Jumbo loaf will cost RM4, which is 45 sen more. The budget Bonanza Big Value load will cost 35 sen more at RM3.10.
Gardenia's wholegrain bread will cost 30 sen more, while the Bran and WheatGerm will cost 40 sen more.
For the Delicia and Toast-em line, which includes the Butterscotch and Choco Raisin bread, they will be priced at RM4 each after a 30 sen increase.
The company's sambal bilis buns will cost RM1.30 starting next month while its Quick Bites cream buns will cost 10 sen extra at RM1.
Gardenia Bakeries (KL) thanked its customers for their support and stressed that price hikes were a last resort after it had taken other measures to maximise operative efficiency.
Gardenia Bakeries (KL) only sells products in Peninsular Malaysia.
A separate entity, Gardenia Bakeries (East Malaysia) Sdn Bhd - now under Kim Teck Cheong Consolidated Bhd - caters to the Sabah and Sarawak market. - Mkini
