MOH fines PN RM20k, Najib-event organiser RM4k over activities in Malacca

The Health Ministry has issued compounds over activities attended by Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin and former Umno president Najib Abdul Razak in Malacca.

In a statement today, the ministry said investigations by the state Health Department found that both former prime ministers had not attended any gatherings related to the forthcoming Malacca election, but rather held "walkabouts".

Nonetheless, it said fines were still issued to the organisers for failing to ensure social distancing at the events attended by the two.

PN was slapped with an RM20,000 compound while an individual who organised one of Najib's events was fined RM4,000.

Najib was touring Malacca on Saturday. However, he insisted that he was merely a visitor and was not conducting political activities.

Muhyiddin was also in Malacca on the same day to visit several Gerai Prihatin Rakyat - stalls selling subsidised staple goods at a steep discount. He was wearing a PN shirt.

On Oct 24, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said Covid-19 protocols were amended to ban all physical gatherings and social events related to the Malacca election, from Oct 25 to Nov 27.

The Health Ministry had warned that "disguised" campaigning can still be punishable under the ban.

Previously, Malacca PKR was slapped with an RM10,000 compound for operating a mobile stage in residential areas to speak to residents so that the people did not have to come out of their houses.

Youth party Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) was also compounded RM4,000 for holding a brief press conference at the Stadthuys in Malacca City that was attended by five party leaders. - Mkini
