Mohd Rafiq Naizamohideen today announced his resignation as Malacca Bersatu chief and Malacca Perikatan Nasional (PN) chief with immediate effect following his defeat in the recently concluded state election.
Rafiq, who was defeated by BN in Telok Mas state seat, said the decision was made to allow new leadership in the state Bersatu and PN in preparation for the 15th general election.
"This will also enable me to focus on strengthening the support of the people for Tangga Batu PN and Bersatu.
"I can also focus fully on my responsibilities as Bersatu vice-president (for the upcoming) 15th general election," he said in a statement today.
"My resignation letter will be submitted to Bersatu president and PN chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin by tomorrow," he said.
"I would like to apologise for the mistake I made during my tenure," he said.
Rafiq (above), 35, was appointed as state executive councillor in charge of industry, trade and investment portfolio between 2018 and 2021.
He was fielded in Paya Rumput which is under the Tangga Batu parliamentary constituency in the 2018 election but moved to Telok Mas in the Kota Melaka parliamentary seat in the recent state poll.
He was defeated by BN's Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman with a majority of 2,076 votes.
Bersatu only managed to win in two out of 15 state seats it contested in the Malacca polls on Nov 20.
Its allies PAS and Gerakan lost all eight and five seats contested, respectively. - Mkini
