Ti: Use science to understand LGBT issues, not just blame the West

PARLIAMENT | Youth and Sports Deputy Minister Ti Lian Ker said the issues surrounding the LGBT community should be understood through science and psychology, instead of simply placing the blame on the spread of “Western values”.

He was responding to Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz (PAS-Bachok) who had asked what government interventions were planned to handle the spread of “perverse” Western values, including violence and LGBT issues, among the community here in the country.

“With regards to Western values, I feel that any values anywhere are human and humanitarian or community-minded.

“We should examine and understand the root cause of the problem and not just blame it on Western influence,” Ti said in the Dewan Rakyat today.

In a Facebook posting later, Ti reiterated his point, saying it is easier to blame the West for everything that is perceived as negative.

“I have emphasised that we need to understand the real issues involving the LGBT community by understanding the science, psychology or physical being in order to understand the root of the problem, instead of blaming it solely on the West,” he said.

Nik Abduh had earlier said one of the big issues of today is the erosion of “Eastern values” while “perverse Western values” were gaining in influence.

He also believes that without serious government intervention, the attack on our culture and values will become even more serious.

In his reply to Nik Abduh in the Dewan Rakyat earlier, Ti also said the Youth and Sports Ministry welcomed the government’s efforts in handling the LGBT community and the issue of violence and aggression.

Many initiatives have been launched by the ministry to reduce violence and aggression among the youths, he said, with targeted programmes towards high-risk youths. - Mkini
