Rapid Rail has activated a passenger control plan connecting the Pasar Seni MRT station to the Pasar Seni LRT station in anticipation of increased ridership during peak hours.
The measure has been in place since June 16 following the start of the government's announcement of free rides for one month on all Rapid KL public transport networks.
"Passengers will be lined up in waiting areas according to their travel direction and escorted to the right platform or exit.
"This is after auxiliary police personnel confirmed there is no extreme congestion that can pose a safety hazard," said the rail operator in a statement to Malaysiakini.
"The waiting time in the queue at the waiting area is about three to five minutes," said Rapid Rail, adding that additional operational personnel have been assigned to selected stations, including Pasar Seni LRT and MRT.
A representative from the company was responding to Malaysiakini's queries based on passenger feedback, particularly over congestion during peak hours and longer waiting times between trains.
Daily updates
To assist passengers in planning their journeys, Rapid Rail said daily announcements are made on the company's social media at 6am and 4pm, providing an overall estimate of trains' status and waiting times.
"Throughout the day, announcements on rail frequencies are made at regular intervals in real-time, based on the permitted number of trains operating, to assist commuters and reduce congestion," it added.
On the Kelana Jaya LRT line, Rapid Rail said there are 34 trains in service with a targeted five minutes interval during peak hours and seven minutes during non-peak hours, weekends and public holidays.
It admitted that the reduced number of trains due to safety factors had led to a longer wait time between arrivals.
A commuter who wants to be known as Daniel said he experienced longer wait times while commuting from KLCC LRT station.
"It is certainly crowded. In the past, maybe it was every three minutes, but now it's five.
"One time, the train was stuck. This was some time after the movement control order. It didn't move, and then there was a long delay.
"Certainly there is a difference now when the trains are more crowded," the telemarketer added.
Express bus lane
To further ease congestion, Rapid Rail said the Rapid Bus service has introduced the RapidKL express bus lane beginning June 17.
The RapidKL express bus lane connects passengers from the KLCC bus station to Wangsa Maju LRT, as well as from the Pasar Seni MRT to the Universiti LRT with a 15-minute frequency.
"Rapid Bus has also expanded the service to cater for rail commuters in the morning peak hours," it added. - Mkini
