Let’s show PH better than ‘corrupt’ BN and Bersatu, says Pua

PETALING JAYA: Former Damansara MP Tony Pua of DAP has urged Pakatan Harapan to take its position in the government as an opportunity to show Malaysians that a multiracial coalition is the way forward for Malaysia.

At a DAP fundraising dinner here, Pua said PH supporters must prove to doubters that “a multiracial party that is clean and not corrupt” could do better “than corrupt coalitions (sic) like Barisan Nasional, Umno and Bersatu”.

He said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is PH chairman, must complete his full term “as a popular prime minister” and prove PH’s detractors wrong while he is still in power.

“Take the opportunity to showcase to the people of Malaysia, the doubters out there, the people who do not believe in PH, the people who do not believe in multiracial coalition politics.

“Prove to them that a multiracial party that is clean and not corrupt … can actually do better than corrupt coalitions (sic) like Barisan Nasional, Umno and Bersatu.

“That’s what we want to prove while we have the five-year opportunity to showcase the difference. If we’re successful, I’m certain that in four years’ time at the next general election, we will receive even greater support from the people,” he said.

“And by we, I mean Pakatan Harapan.”

Reforms when PH govt stands on its own

Pua also expressed hope that PH would be able to form the government on its own at the next general election.

“We will then be able to implement the reforms and changes that we want under PH to the benefit of the people of Malaysia. That’s very, very important for all of us.”

He acknowledged that the unity government still had unfulfilled promises and unmet goals, but believed it is doing well. He added that it will take time for meaningful change to take effect in Malaysia.

However, Pua said a more crucial factor was that the Anwar-led administration was fragile as it could fall if several parties in the unity coalition decided to quit the government.

That’s why it is necessary for Anwar to hold the government together and be a popular figure among all segments of Malaysia’s society, Pua said. - FMT
