UMNO Youth Chief Dr Akmal Saleh is getting a lot of support from UMNO grassroots after his detention in Kota Kinabalu with the popular support likely to weigh in his favour in his struggles with the law following his boycott calls of the KK Mart in the socks with Allah writing scandal.
Throngs of UMNO members and supporters showed support for the doctor who has found a new calling with his ‘no fear, no surrender’ slogan that is gaining ground.
Supporters are saying that with the arrest of one Dr Akmal, thousands of other Akmal will rise to continue the call for the KK Mart boycott.
Other users on Facebook in particular are saying the arrest of the UMNO Youth leader will give more strength to the grassroots to boycott KK Mart.
His followers firmly believe that his actions are for the defence of Islam and of the Malay-Muslim community in Malaysia.
Others are saying the more the authorities press on Dr Akmal, the more people will be defiant and will show support for the doctor.
With such support, UMNO may have found its latest firebrand leader who could, in the end, rise above the law and walk free from the investigations.
Moreover, Dr Akmal now appears to defy legal constraints with the backing of public opinion.
On top of that, while a Sarawak Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has called for the arrest of Dr Akmal, which was effectively carried out in Kota Kinabalu, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim seems to have a different opinion on the turn of events.
Anwar downplayed the hype over the ‘arrest’ saying Dr Akmal was merely being questioned by police, contrary to claims by the UMNO Youth chief that he was detained yesterday (April 5).
“I don’t think he was arrested, but he was just called in (for questioning),” Anwar told reporters.
He reminded the public against using the controversy surrounding the sale of socks bearing the word “Allah” to instigate others, saying the government would not compromise on 3R (race, religion and royalty) issues.
On the other hand, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook played down suggestions that developments surrounding Dr Akmal would cause friction in the unity government.
Loke said the police were merely discharging their duties, and “it doesn’t mean that anybody from the government or those belonging to parties in the government cannot be questioned”. – Focus Malaysia
