The Election Commission (EC) will meet on June 6 to discuss the upcoming Sungai Bakap by-election.
“A press conference will be held right after the special meeting is held,” said EC secretary Ikmalrudin Ishak in a statement today.
While not mentioned in the statement, such meetings are usually where key dates for the election will be decided and announced, including the polling date.
The by-election is being called following the death of the incumbent assemblyperson Nor Zamri Latiff last Friday, after being admitted to the hospital to treat stomach inflammation.
Ikmalrudin confirmed the EC has received official notification from Penang state assembly speaker Law Choo Kiang about the Sungai Bakap seat vacancy, and is now required by law to hold the by-election within 60 days.
During the last state election, Nor Zamri, who is also the Nibong Tebal PAS division chief, defeated the Pakatan Harapan candidate Nurhidayah Che Rose with a majority of 1,563 votes.
