PETALING JAYA
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has investigated two suspects for allegedly making
malicious and provocative
comments during a replay of a parliamentary session on TikTok on July 9.

MCMC said the two suspects had their statements recorded yesterday following public complaints.

The suspects’ SIM cards and smartphones were seized to assist in the investigation,
 said MCMC in a statement.

MCMC views misuse of communication services and social media seriously, and reminds the public not to use network services and online apps to make any comments that violate the country’s laws.

The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which provides for a maximum fine of RM50,000, imprisonment for up to one year, or both, upon conviction.

The section prohibits the production or transmission of communications that are obscene, indecent or offensive with intent to annoy others or cause inconvenience.

MCMC had investigated 3,077 cases involving offences related to obscene, indecent, false, threatening and offensive elements under the Communications and Multimedia Act from 2009 until last June 15.

On July 9, deputy communications minister Teo Nie Ching said 151 of the cases were prosecuted in court, reported Bernama. - FMT
