PETALING JAYA
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has remanded the chief operating officer (COO) of a highway concessionaire for allegedly receiving more than RM300,000 in bribes.

Initial investigations revealed that the suspect received bribes from company owners for the construction of a highway project in the Klang Valley valued at around RM6 billion,
 said an MACC source.

The COO, who is in his 50s, was arrested at around 8pm yesterday when he went to the anti-graft agency’s headquarters to provide his statement.

He was brought to the magistrates’ court in Putrajaya today and a five-day remand order was issued by magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin, the source said.

MACC investigation division senior director Hishamuddin Hashim, when contacted, confirmed the arrest and said investigations are being carried out under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009 for receiving bribes.

On July 2, MACC remanded two individuals, who are directors of a company, to assist in its probe into alleged bribery involving highway contracts in the Klang Valley worth over RM1 billion.

Three suspects who were previously remanded in relation to the investigation had been released on bail after their remand period expired. They included the CEO of the highway concessionaire. - FMT
