Transport Minister Anthony Loke today said that Chinese school fundraisers, including those involving breweries, were mostly held outside school premises and attended by parents as well as supporters.
In the past, he stated that such events were mostly held in restaurants or other external premises, in accordance with guidelines from the Education Ministry.
"Most (fundraisers) don’t involve students because the ones who attend are their parents or the public who come to support the school.
“The programme does not involve students,” Loke stressed.
The DAP secretary-general said this when asked for a response to concerns that students, regardless of religion, were being indirectly exposed to alcohol through the support of brewery companies for Chinese schools.
Loke reiterated that hosting such fundraisers has been a practice for Chinese schools and therefore, there was no issue among non-Muslim parents.
Issues surrounding donations for Chinese schools made headlines after a public uproar against Tiger-Sinchew Chinese Education Fundraising Concert as Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Aiman Athirah Sabu was seen holding a mock cheque featuring the beer brand’s logo.
Previously, the Education Ministry said it is retaining existing guidelines that ban schools from accepting contributions from the proceeds of alcohol, drugs, gambling and similar activities deemed harmful to student development. - Mkini
