Rembia assemblyperson Muhammad Jailani Khamis has less than three days to clarify his political status to Malacca state assembly speaker Ibrahim Durum.
This follows Ibrahim’s meeting with Jailani (above) and sending an official letter on July 19, demanding immediate clarification about his position.
“When I met him, he did not bring any letters. I gave him two weeks, from July 19 until Friday (Aug 2), for an explanation.
“Still, until today, I have not received any letter,” Ibrahim was quoted by FMT.
The issue of Jailani’s status arose after PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan announced that Jailani had joined the Islamist party on July 16.
Umno suspended Jailani for six years after he attended a Perikatan Nasional event in Johor in September 2023.
Takiyuddin revealed that Jailani had submitted his application to join PAS on June 10, 2023, and it was accepted the same day.
The PAS leader argued that Jailani had not violated Malacca’s anti-party hopping law, as the defection took place one month before the state greenlit the law on July 31, 2023.
Ibrahim noted that instead of replying to his letter, Jailani directed him to contact Takiyuddin for an explanation.
Rep must letter to be placed in assembly
However, Ibrahim did not do so, stating that the decision on Jailani’s placement in the state assembly could only be made if Jailani replied to his letter.
“He asked me to contact the PAS secretary-general, but that doesn’t concern me.
“If he replied to my letter, I could either place him in the government or the opposition bloc,” he added.
Expressing his hope that Jailani would respond, Ibrahim said a decision would be made once he returned from Australia on Aug 8.
“I hope he will reply my letter,” he said.
Prior to Jailani’s defection, BN had 21 out of 28 seats in the Malacca state assembly, while Harapan had five and Bersatu two seats. - Mkini
