Is govt sincere about resolving Beng Hock’s death, asks DAP man

A Sarawak DAP man has questioned the Pakatan Harapan-led government’s commitment and sincerity in holding a thorough investigation into the death of Teoh Beng Hock.

Soo Tien Ren, who leads Sarawak DAP Youth’s political education bureau, said it was unacceptable that participants of a demonstration outside Parliament yesterday were subjected to rough treatment by the police.

This raises a question: is the current government sincere in resolving Teoh Beng Hock’s case?

In a statement, Soo said Beng Hock’s family simply wanted to unearth the truth behind his death and seek justice for the former aide to a Selangor executive councillor.

“The government must listen to the public’s demands for justice. This demand transcends party lines, ethnicities and classes – it is simply a matter of justice versus evil.

We have successfully changed the government and brought Malaysia into a new era, and these achievements are built on the sacrifices of Beng Hock and millions of Malaysians. Therefore, we must bring about justice.

He also urged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to immediately set a specific date and time to meet Beng Hock’s family to hear their demands.

The Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement yesterday said it would bill the government over alleged 

police violence

 against participants of a three-day 96km walk for justice.

They had sought to submit a memorandum to MPs but could not enter the building as originally planned.

Anwar later said he was aware of what transpired outside Parliament and promised to meet Beng Hock’s family soon and review their memorandum.

In 2009, Beng Hock, the former aide to then Selangor executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah, was found dead on the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam, hours after he had arrived for questioning on the 14th floor of the Selangor MACC headquarters.

A coroner’s inquest in 2011 delivered an open verdict and his family subsequently filed an appeal against the findings.

Three years later, the Court of Appeal set aside the open verdict and ruled that Beng Hock’s death was caused by multiple injuries as a result of unlawful acts by unknown persons. - FMT
