Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said action against defecting Rembia assemblyperson Muhammad Jailani Khamis will be handled by Malacca Chief Minister Ab Rauf Yusoh.
He said action will also be taken by the Umno supreme council.
“I have already discussed with the Malacca CM and I fully leave it to him as state chairperson of BN and Umno to take action.
“He will also take that action to the Umno supreme council,” said Zahid (above), according to a report by Berita Harian.
The BN chairperson went on to deny rumours that more elected representatives wanted to join other political parties.
Yesterday, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan revealed that Jailani, who was first elected under PKR and is now on a six-year suspension from Umno, has been a member of the Islamist party since June last year.
Takiyuddin claimed that Jailani joining PAS did not go against the anti-hopping law as Malacca had yet to enact the law at that time.
With Jailani’s defection, PAS now has a representative in the Malacca state legislative assembly - bringing the total number of opposition-held seats to three.
The other two Perikatan Nasional lawmakers in the state assembly are Mohd Yadzil Yaakub (Bemban), and Mohd Aleef Yusof (Sungai Udang).
Takiyuddin said Jailani submitted his application to join PAS on June 10, 2023, which was accepted on the same day.
He noted that the Malacca state assembly only greenlit the anti-hopping law on July 31 last year. - Mkini
