PETALING JAYA
Perlis menteri besar Shukri Ramli is in the dark about rumours that he has been asked to step down after 20 months in power.

I don’t know anything about it. There’s no need (to comment),
 he told FMT.

Shukri, who is also Perlis PAS leader, said he did not want to entertain naughty political gossip about possibly resigning.

Talk has been circulating on social media that Shukri had been ordered by undisclosed persons to relinquish the post, with a date apparently already fixed.

PAS spiritual adviser Hashim Jasin admitted to hearing the rumours but maintains that it was nothing more than coffee shop talk.

There are too many rumours going around, but none of them are true,
said the former three-term Sanglang assemblyman, adding that there was no such order from PAS.

Executive councillor Izizam Ibrahim of Bersatu also said the state government was operating as usual; he said he has not received any information about Shukri possibly stepping down.

For now, it’s business as usual,
 said the Titi Tinggi assemblyman.

Shukri, a three-term assemblyman for Sanglang, became menteri besar after Perikatan Nasional won 14 of 15 state seats in Perlis in the November 2022 general election, ending Barisan Nasional’s 65-year hold over the state.

A year later, Kuala Perlis assemblyman Abu Bakar Hamzah from Bersatu called for Shukri to step down for not appointing him as one of the seven state executive councillors.

Abu Bakar claimed that Shukri had defied PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin, who he said proposed his name for a post in the state’s executive council.

In April, Shukri spent eight hours being questioned by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, which he said was over various cases.

The following month, his son, Syafeeq, claimed trial to falsifying claims of more than RM19,000 for the supply of drinks for the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail.

This also led to calls for Shukri to resign, though PAS leaders said it was unnecessary. - FMT
