The sedition charge slapped against Muhyiddin Yassin will not succeed as the former prime minister was only stating facts, said Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin.
The opposition leader claimed that the law Pakatan Harapan previously opposed is now being used to intimidate Perikatan Nasional leaders.
"Truth will prevail, God willing, and the oppression of Harapan-BN who are trying to manipulate the Sedition Act 1948 to silence PN leaders from speaking the truth will not succeed.
"What Muhyiddin said during the Nenggiri by-election campaign is factual, but the Harapan-BN government seems uncomfortable when Malaysians learn the reality," Hamzah (above) said in a statement on Facebook today.
This morning Muhyiddin claimed trial over alleged hurtful remarks against the former Agong in a campaign speech during the Nenggiri by-election.
He pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him at the Gua Musang Sessions Court before judge Nik Mohd Tarmizie Nik Mohd Shukri.
Harian Metro reported that the prosecution had asked for bail to be set at RM20,000 with a gag order imposed.
However, the defence objected to this and argued that an RM5,000 bail is sufficient, as was imposed on Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, who was also charged with sedition against a royal.
The judge then set bail at RM5,000 and rejected the gag order.
Commenting further, Hamzah expressed gratitude to the defence team comprising lead counsel Amer Hamzah Arshad, Chetan Jethwani, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan, Mohd Nasir Abdullah and Mariana Mat Kudin for carrying out their duties efficiently and excellently.
"Indeed, Bersatu and PN stand firmly with Muhyiddin in opposing this oppression and upholding the idealism of struggle for a better future for Malaysia," he said. - Mkini
