Protect Islam from political exploitation, Umno members told

KUALA LUMPUR
Umno must prevent the politicisation of Islam and present the religion with wisdom and intellectual integrity, says its deputy president Mohamad Hasan.

In launching the general assembly of Umno’s Wanita, Youth and Puteri wings tonight, Mohamad said the party is well-positioned to take up the task as it had previously shown Islam as a key driver for national development.

We were the ones who pioneered the introduction of advanced Islamic banking and financial systems,
 he said.

We also led the way in Islamic education, aligning it with modern education. We have established various Islamic universities and hundreds of such schools.

For Umno, Islam is not just a name. It is a guide and a beacon for change and competitiveness.

Earlier in his speech, Mohamad criticised certain groups for

hijacking
Islam and accused them of using it to further their own agendas.

More dangerously, anyone who does not align with them is seen as threatening Islam or failing to support it,
he said without naming specific groups.

He also alleged that these groups are using Islam to divide the Malay community and alienate non-Muslims from the religion.

As a result, the ummah is divided, and Islam is weakened,
he said, adding that Islam would be endangered if it continues to be exploited by these groups.

Umno must ensure that this does not happen. We must clearly articulate Umno’s stance on this matter.

We’re sending the Palestinians back, don’t worry

Mohamad, who is also the foreign minister, said there should be no concerns about the group of Palestinians who arrived in Malaysia last Friday staying in the country permanently.

Some states are concerned that we might resettle the Palestinians there. That won’t happen. We have promised to send them back,
he told reporters after the launch.

But as an international community, we have compassion for their suffering. The little we do should not be blown out of proportion. - FMT
