LSHSM’s CEO Khairil Faizal Othman said its three immediate priorities were ensuring employees continued to receive their pay, cooperating with the government to facilitate a smooth handover and safeguarding the country’s image.
“The company looks to the government’s continued guidance for a smooth and respectful handover. It remains committed to supporting Malaysia’s efforts to elevate Kuala Lumpur Tower as a modern, visitor-friendly and vibrant public iconic landmark,” he said in a statement.
LSHSM’s statement comes in the wake of allegations by the departing operator that it had an existing 30-year concession to manage the iconic skyscraper.
Hydroshoppe Sdn Bhd, the parent company of Menara Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd (MKLSB), said the government, its public-private partnership unit and the communications ministry had earlier agreed to award a 15-year concession, effective from Jan 1, 2025 to Dec 31, 2039.
However, last week, LSHSM was awarded a 20-year concession of the tower, effective April 1.
Khairil said his firm was given the reins to run the tower after vying for it under a request for proposal called by the government.
He said the government, via the communications ministry, had said the “previous operator” was fully aware that LSHSM would be taking over the management of the Kuala Lumpur Tower.
“The ministry has further assured that Kuala Lumpur Tower’s operations will continue uninterrupted, with the transition planned and coordinated to safeguard public interest.”
Hydroshoppe and MKLSB have filed a lawsuit to challenge the award of the concession, seeking RM20.13 million in losses and damages and for the concession to be transferred to them.
Lim Seong Hai Capital Bhd, the controlling parent company of LSHSM, was reported to have said that it would defend the suit and continue to fulfil its obligations under the 20-year agreement. - FMT
