As Bersatu AGM looms, poison pen letter vilifying Hamzah surfaces

With Bersatu scheduled to have its eighth annual general meeting soon, a poison pen letter has surfaced, targeting its deputy president, Hamzah Zainudin.

According to the letter sighted by Malaysiakini, the author accused Hamzah (above) of planning to oust party president Muhyiddin Yassin.

While saying the party takes the matter seriously, Bersatu information chief Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz said he personally had not received the letter.

“It’s hard for me to comment on it as I have not received it.

“However, the allegations levelled in the poison pen letter are serious and we must verify its authenticity,” he told Malaysiakini.

Faisal said this in response to Hang Tuah Jaya Bersatu division chief Azrudin Idris, who claimed to have received the letter several days ago.

Azrudin claimed that the letter was being made viral on the party’s WhatsApp group using local and Thai phone numbers.

“The letter only has one message, which is to smear the image of deputy president Hamzah.

“From one angle, it shows how capable our deputy president is, given that certain quarters have to attack him incessantly.

“However, from another perspective, it raises questions about who is behind the poison pen letter,” he said in a statement.

Undermining Hamzah

Aside from the alleged plan to remove Muhyiddin, the letter also claimed that Hamzah was the “broker” who spearheaded the move to establish the Perikatan Nasional executive council.

Bersatu is scheduled to hold its AGM on Sept 6 and 7 at the Ideal Convention Centre, Shah Alam.

Recently, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man confirmed that PN has officially formed a presidential council, comprising the heads of the opposition coalition’s four component parties.

According to Free Malaysia Today, while the presidential council would oversee the coalition, the executive committee would take on the task of “championing issues”.

‘Cowardly act’

Bersatu supreme council member Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal called the letter’s author a coward.

He said that sending such letters when the AGM is approaching would only bring disrepute to the party’s image, adding that members should voice their grievances during party meetings.

“Spreading poison pen letters, especially as the AGM approaches, is unbecoming. By right, one should voice their issues or differences of opinion in meetings.

“This is what happens when you get a pen-for-hire to attack anyone who is deemed a threat to the president. It’s disgusting.

“Anyone can give their opinions; this is a democracy, but there is no need to be cowardly about it,” he told Malaysiakini. - Mkini
