Man arrested after stolen funeral van crashes on Skudai highway

A LOCAL man was arrested on suspicion of stealing a funeral van belonging to a surau, before the vehicle was involved in a collision with a lorry on the Skudai Highway early Thursday morning.

“Investigations revealed that the Toyota Hiace funeral van, owned by Surau Nurul Haq at Jalan Besar, Kampung Sungai Sayong, was stolen between 12.01am and 2am,” said Kulai District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Tan Seng Lee.

According to Tan, the suspect, who sustained injuries to his face and legs in the crash, has 14 prior criminal records.

“Three other accomplices who remain at large are actively being tracked down, and police are investigating the suspect’s involvement in other cases within the district and nearby areas.”

The management of Surau Nurul Haq in Kampung Sungai Sayong 1, Kulai, expressed sadness and disappointment over the incident in which their funeral van was stolen and later severely damaged in the accident.

Bilal of Surau Nurul Haq, Zahiruzaman Saim, said the funeral van had been acquired from a government department last December through an asset disposal process, and had not yet been used for funeral management. — Focus Malaysia
