MIC president still coy about leaving BN

MIC president SA Vigneswaran is still coy on whether the party will remain with BN or otherwise.

While reiterating that the party needs to change to save itself, he was non-committal about whether this would lead to a BN exit.

"It does not mean we go on a new path, but maybe we have a chance," Vigneswaran (above) said at a gathering of veteran MIC women from Penang, Kedah, and Perlis at Seberang Jaya last night.

Four MIC state chapters have approved resolutions to compel the party to quit the coalition.

The party has also reportedly entered into informal talks with Perikatan Nasional.

This led to MIC sending a representative to the Bersatu annual general meeting (AGM) last week. However, no representative was present at the PAS muktamar in Kedah due to a scheduling issue.

At the heart of MIC's dissatisfaction with BN are concerns that the party will be sidelined in the next general election.

This is because BN and its partner Pakatan Harapan have been operating on an incumbency formula when distributing seats.

This has led to fears in MIC and MCA that the two parties will only be allowed to contest in the few seats they hold in the next election.

MIC is expected to make a party-level decision on the matter at its AGM next month. - Mkini
