Selangor PAS assemblyperson Shafie Ngah has apologised unconditionally to Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan over claims the latter was not an honest Muslim or a religiously devout one, and that he supports communist ideology.
“I admit these statements are completely untrue, baseless and without any merit.
“I deeply regret making or causing the publication of these statements, and I am fully aware of the hurt, distress and reputational damage caused by my action to Syahredzan,” he said in a statement today.
Shafie (above, right) issued the apology over the allegations he had uttered during a Facebook live on Oct 25, 2022, as well as between July 8 and 12, 2023.
Syahredzan, who is a lawyer, filed the suit in the Kuala Lumpur High Court in July 2023 against Shafie following his failure to meet Syahredzan’s demands regarding the statements.
No more personal disputes
In the defamation suit, Syahredzan had demanded general, aggravated and exemplary damages, as well as an apology and a court order to prevent Shafie from making further defamatory statements.

At the time, Shafie had said, via his social media post, that he would fight the case in court.
“This involves ideologies (that is between) PAS and DAP. As long as my soul is contained in this body, I will fight until death,” he said on Aug 16, 2023.
In his apology today, Shafie said he retracted the statement made against Syahredzan - unconditionally and in full - and gave an undertaking not to make any more defamatory statements.
“I take full responsibility for my actions and am committed to ensuring that I will act with more caution, respect and integrity in the future,” he said.
Shafie added that both parties appeared in court on Sept 22 to confirm the agreement.

Syahredzan said Shafie’s apology would also be published in two national newspapers.
“There should be no more personal disputes between me and Shafie, following this settlement and when its terms are fully complied with,” he said.
Syahredzan was represented by lawyers Daniel Albert, Nicholas Yap and Amanda Yap from the firm Daniel & Wong. - Mkini
