Abu Bakar appointed acting chief judge of Malaya

Court of Appeal president Abu Bakar Jais will temporarily assume the chief judge of Malaya (CJM) position, starting Nov 15 until the post is filled, following the departure of Hasnah Hashim last week.

A letter dated Nov 14 and signed by Chief Justice Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh showed the appointment was made as per Section 9(3)(a) of the Courts of Judicature Act 1964, which allows for a Federal judge to sit in during a CJM vacancy.

Abu Bakar (above) had assumed the Court of Appeal president post on July 18 last year, replacing Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim, who retired on July 3 the same year.

The 63-year-old began his judicial career as a judicial commissioner at the Kuala Lumpur High Court on July 8, 2013, and was subsequently elevated to the High Court in 2016, Court of Appeal in 2018 and the Federal Court in 2023.

He was part of the Federal Court panel in 2023 that dismissed former premier Najib Abdul Razak’s application to review his conviction and sentence for misappropriating RM42 million from SRC International Sdn Bhd. - Mkini
