SABAH POLLS | Pakatan Harapan candidate for the Silam state seat has withdrawn from the Sabah election, stepping away from what had become a politically awkward “love-triangle” clash involving two federal partners.
Abdul Halim Sidek Gulam Hassan announced his decision after “careful consideration” and discussions with Harapan’s leadership.
He said it was a personal decision made “without any pressure or negotiation from outside parties.”
For the record, Harapan had formed an electoral pact with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah on one side and BN on the other.
Silam had become one of the most sensitive contests of the campaign, with Halim’s presence putting it in direct competition with both GRS and BN.
GRS is fielding Mizma Appehdullah, while BN has nominated Sharif Musa Sharif Mabul.

Contenders will face Warisan’s Yusof Apdal and Perikatan Nasional’s Balkis Kalinggalan, adding further weight to the nine-way fight, along with Parti Impian Sabah and two Independents.
Warisan via Dumi Pg Damsal won the seat in 2020.
Maintaining harmony a priority
Commenting on his latest decision, Halim said maintaining harmony among Harapan’s federal partners was more important than contesting the seat.
“Unity and cooperation… are more important for the future of our state,” he said.
Halim also pledged to continue serving Silam and Lahad Datu residents and expressed confidence that the Madani administration would remain committed to Sabah’s development.
Sabah PKR chief Mustapha Sakmud said he respected Halim’s decision, adding it was made after considering various factors such as maintaining ties among allies in Sabah.

He also stressed that Halim made the decision on his own without being pressured by anyone.
“Camaraderie and strengthening political ties (among partners) will always be our priority to ensure Sabah’s political stability remains strong,” Mustapha added. - Mkini
