Mahfuz: 'We are Amanah, not party of anger'

Amanah vice-president Mahfuz Omar reminded party members that they belong to Amanah, not a “party of anger” (amarah).

Commenting on the commotion that broke out during the morning session of the convention, the former Pokok Sena MP said the incident occurred because of the delegates’ strong fighting spirit.

“This morning’s incident, I think, surprised everyone. To me, it shows that our struggle is alive - it even went viral quickly in the media.

“It reflects a very immense spirit of struggle. But let me remind everyone - we are Amanah, not a party of anger.

“We must distinguish between amanah (trust) and amarah (anger). Let’s debate with reason, intellect, and knowledge, and surely we will arrive at good conclusions,” Mahfuz (above) said during his winding-up speech at the 2025 Amanah National Convention in Shah Alam today.

Earlier, tensions flared when several delegates demanded that a motion regarding the party election be debated immediately.

Permanent chairperson Azhar Abd Shukur was reported to have repeatedly called for calm in the situation before allowing two delegates to present their respective proposals on the party polls.

The situation heated up again when differing opinions emerged - one calling for the party election to be postponed until after 2026, and another urging that they proceed as planned.

Amanah sec-gen Faiz Fadzil

Amanah secretary-general Faiz Fadzil said that the motions committee had received two motions related to the party elections scheduled for next year.

“One motion proposed postponement, while the other urged continuation. The committee met and accepted both as valid proposals.

“So, since both motions were accepted, we felt there was no need to debate further. The timing of the election will depend on our electoral strategy - the most important thing is for this party to win the next general election and continue governing with Pakatan Harapan and the unity coalition,” he said.

No decision yet on 2026 party polls

Further, Amanah communications director Khalid Samad clarified that no decision has been made regarding the 2026 party leadership election.

He said the party leadership has yet to discuss the matter, as it depends on when the next general election will be held.

“There’s been no meeting to discuss it because we don’t know when the general election will be. According to the party constitution, the leadership has the power to decide on postponement, so we’ll review the situation next year.

“No one has decided to delay, and no one has decided to proceed - not yet,” the former Shah Alam MP stressed. - Mkini
