Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is expected to brief the cabinet on Tuesday over recent rumours of an impending cabinet reshuffle, according to Amanah president Mohamad Sabu.
“I heard it on the news. But this Tuesday there’s a cabinet meeting - we’ll hear directly from the prime minister then,” said the agriculture and food security minister, when asked for comments on the resignation of Ewon Benedick as entrepreneur and cooperatives development minister last night.
Quizzed on whether Ewon’s resignation will trigger a rumoured impending reshuffle, Mohamad (above) said, “We’ll discuss it in the cabinet this Tuesday. We’ll hear the prime minister’s explanation then.”
Mohamad said this when met by reporters after delivering his winding-up speech at the 10th Amanah Convention in Shah Alam.
“I don’t know… I leave that to the prime minister,” said Mohamad when asked about his own position in the cabinet.
Last night, Ewon, who is also Sabah Harapan chairperson, said his move comes as he anticipates that the Attorney-General’s Chambers will continue to advise the government to appeal a High Court ruling regarding the 40 percent federal revenue that Putrajaya owes Sabah.
Earlier this week, rumours surrounding an impending cabinet reshuffle had heightened, in anticipation of another vacancy by Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, whose two-term senatorship ends next month.
On whether Ewon’s resignation will impact Harapan’s preparations for the upcoming 17th Sabah election, Mohamad said he believes that the matter is unlikely.
“I don’t think so. Because in Sabah, it’s all about the political parties… I’m not sure about the final seat arrangements.
“But I believe there will be a state-level (Harapan) meeting and everyone is under the federal government (coalition),” he said. - Mkini
