Malaysian's seafood feast in South Korea ends with a swollen face, RM1,500 bill

KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian traveller's fun trip to South Korea took an unexpected turn when Threads user @abangafiq9293 suffered facial swelling after eating seafood at a restaurant.

He said the allergic reaction, which cost him RM1,500 in medical bills, would later be covered by his travel insurance.

"My intention was just to eat seafood. But look at the side effects.

"My insurance covers this on a pay and claim basis," he wrote.

The post sparked a discussion on travel safety and food allergies, with some users suggesting he might have been allergic to seafood.

However, he clarified that he had previously eaten shrimp, oysters, and clams without any reaction.

"I'm not sure what I'm allergic to this time," he added in the comments.

Another user, @fatin.amalik.carter, shared a similar experience, saying, "The first time I went to Korea, I tried mussels for the first time and my hand was partially swollen.

"Turns out I was allergic to mussels. Thank God I didn't get anaphylactic shock."

Meanwhile user @fresfaifrenchfries said she always travels with essential medicine.

"This is the worst fear while travelling… I would bring all the medicine I can including antihistamines, charcoal tablets, paracetamol, lozenges, and anything else I might need because I know I will use one," she said. - NST
