SOUTH KOREA: A major fire that broke out at the E-Land Fashion logistics centre in Cheonan's Dongnam District, South Korea, early yesterday was brought under control after nine hours and 30 minutes of continuous firefighting, Korean media reported.
The blaze erupted around 6.10am at the four-storey warehouse in Pungse-myeon, which stores large quantities of clothing, shoes, and other highly flammable goods.
According to Korea JoongAng Daily, authorities initially issued a Level 1 alert at 6.15am before upgrading it to Level 2 at 7.01am as the fire intensified and spread rapidly.
A total of 430 firefighters, 11 helicopters, and 63 fire trucks from Cheonan, Asan, and neighbouring cities were deployed to the scene.
Reports from Cm Asiae noted that the vast quantity of textiles, shoes, and other flammable materials inside the facility made firefighting efforts difficult.
By mid-morning, the first and second floors had already been largely destroyed.
Firefighters then focused their efforts on containing flames on the third and fourth floors as thick black smoke billowed over surrounding neighbourhoods.
At 7.20am, Cheonan city authorities issued an emergency alert, advising residents to evacuate and urging motorists to avoid the area. The public was also warned about the risks of smoke inhalation.
Completed in 2014, the logistics centre spans approximately 193,210 sq m and serves as a key distribution hub for E-Land's fashion brands.
Despite the scale of the blaze, no injuries were reported. - NST
